On April 15, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to collaborate with law enforcement at all levels. This appeal came after Gachagua raised concerns about his personal safety, alleging that his life was in danger due to state surveillance and intimidation.
Gachagua claimed that unmarked vehicles were trailing him and that he was being harassed by state agents. He expressed fears over his life, stating that if anything happened to him or his family, President William Ruto should be held accountable.
In response, the NPS denied any involvement in the alleged surveillance and abductions. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja stated that the police service is not holding any of the reported abductees and that no police station in the country has detained such individuals.
Previously, in October 2024, Gachagua’s security detail was withdrawn following his impeachment by the Senate. He had been without official security until part of his security detail was reinstated after he publicly expressed fears for his safety. Two of his official bodyguards from the General Service Unit (GSU) were reassigned to him, and police officers were deployed to his private residence in Karen.
