Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has returned to Kenya, marking the commencement of his anticipated campaign for the 2027 presidential elections. His arrival has energized political supporters and allies, setting the stage for a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
Matiang’i’s return follows his tenure at the World Bank, where he served in a senior role focusing on governance reforms. His decision to leave the international position underscores his commitment to re-engage with Kenya’s political scene. Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka confirmed that Matiang’i’s return is a strategic move aimed at launching his presidential bid.
In preparation for his campaign, a grand homecoming event is scheduled for May, organized by a central committee based in Nairobi. The event is expected to include a procession through Nairobi’s Central Business District, culminating in a major rally. Following this, Matiang’i plans to embark on a nationwide tour to engage with voters and outline his vision for the country.
Matiang’i’s political re-entry has garnered substantial support from various quarters. The Jubilee Party, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has endorsed him as their presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. Additionally, over 20 political parties have expressed their backing, reflecting a broad coalition of support.
Regional leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties have formed the Taifa Alliance to consolidate support for Matiang’i within the Abagusii community. Furthermore, Gusii elders have publicly endorsed his candidacy, citing his track record in public service and commitment to national development.
As Matiang’i prepares to launch his campaign, discussions are ongoing regarding the political party he will represent. While the Jubilee Party has declared its support, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has also claimed him as their presidential candidate, indicating potential negotiations ahead.
Matiang’i’s return and the momentum surrounding his campaign suggest a dynamic and competitive race for the presidency in 2027. His experience in public administration and reform positions him as a formidable contender in the upcoming elections.
