On May 2, 2025, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i officially commenced his 2027 presidential campaign with a series of rallies in Kisii and Nyamira counties. This marked his first major public appearance since leaving office, signaling his intent to contest the upcoming general election.
The rallies, organized by the Team Matiang’i Secretariat, attracted a significant turnout of local leaders and supporters. Notable attendees included Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira), Senators Momoima Onyonka and Okong’o Omogeni, as well as several Members of Parliament and County Assembly.
Addressing the crowd at his first stop in Nyansiongo, just three kilometers from his home, Dr. Matiang’i stated, “I have listened and accepted what Kenyans want.” His remarks underscored a commitment to national unity and responsive leadership.
The former CS’s campaign is gaining momentum, with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party, associated with Matiang’i, planning to open at least 26 new offices across the country by mid-2025. This expansion aims to bolster the party’s national presence and support base.
Matiang’i’s bid is also receiving backing from various political figures. Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has been vocal in his support, stating that the Gusii community is united behind Matiang’i’s candidacy. Additionally, the Jubilee Party has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to support Matiang’i for the presidency, highlighting a potential coalition of opposition forces.
However, some political leaders have expressed skepticism about Matiang’i’s prospects. ODM leader Raila Odinga cautioned that support from the Kisii community alone may not be sufficient to secure the presidency, emphasizing the need for broader national appeal.
Despite these challenges, Matiang’i’s campaign is resonating with many Kenyans who view his leadership as a departure from the current administration. His track record in implementing reforms in the education and interior ministries has bolstered his reputation as a capable and results-driven leader.
As the 2027 general election approaches, Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s entry into the presidential race introduces a new dynamic to Kenya’s political landscape, with potential implications for the country’s future leadership.
