On May 12, 2025, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was critically injured in a stabbing attack at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi. The assault occurred around 7:20 AM during morning yard time, resulting in Lanez sustaining 14 stab wounds.
According to a statement from his verified Instagram account, the injuries included seven to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. Both of his lungs collapsed, but he is now breathing on his own and is reportedly in good spirits.
In December 2022, Lanez was convicted on three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The charges stemmed from a July 2020 incident in which Lanez shot rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the feet following an argument after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, testified that Lanez shot her as she exited the vehicle. She later obtained a five-year restraining order against him, citing ongoing harassment from prison
Details of the Stabbing Incident
The prison attack occurred during morning yard time, a period when inmates are allowed outdoor recreation. Lanez was reportedly stabbed 14 times by another inmate. Prison staff provided immediate medical assistance, and Lanez was transported to a hospital in Bakersfield for treatment. Despite the severity of his injuries, Lanez is now breathing on his own and is reportedly in good spirits.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, along with the Office of the Inspector General, has launched an investigation into the incident. The Kern County District Attorney’s Office is poised to file charges pending the outcome of the investigation. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the identity of the assailant has not been publicly released.
Despite his incarceration, Lanez has remained active in the music industry. In March 2025, he released his eighth studio album, Peterson, which he described as the “first ever in-real-time prison album.” The album features guest appearances from various artists, including his son Kai’Lon, his father Sonstar, and his siblings. It reached a peak position of number twenty-five on the US Billboard 200.
Megan Thee Stallion has not publicly commented on the stabbing incident. However, she has previously expressed concerns about Lanez’s actions from prison. In January 2025, a Los Angeles judge granted her a five-year restraining order against Lanez, valid through January 2030, due to ongoing harassment that allegedly continued during Lanez’s incarceration. Megan expressed fear for her safety, citing past trauma and threats.
