As Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections, drastic changes are happening in the political landscape. One of the most interesting things is that the Luo community, that has usually supported the opposition, might start backing President William Ruto. This might seem surprising, here are some reasons behind this possibility.
For a long time, the Luo community has been closely connected with the late Raila Odinga and his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party,
But lately, various Luo leaders have publicly expressed their motive to support Ruto presidential bid. For example, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga and Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi have both praised his leadership and said they will work to bring the Luo community together. Oburu Odinga has said that the partnership between Ruto and the Luo is strong and will last, even though there are some disagreements within ODM.
President Ruto’s government has worked to involve the Luo community in important government jobs and development projects,
since many leaders from Nyanza region now hold key government roles, and there are many projects aimed at improving the lives of people in the area. This visible involvement makes many Luos to see the positivity in Ruto’s leadership and what it brings for the future.
From a political standpoint, supporting Ruto could be a smart move for the Luo community. It might help them stay relevant in politics and get more benefits from government resources. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said the only reason the Luo might stop supporting Ruto is if he chooses not to support the late Raila Odinga again.
Seemingly, the Luo’s support for Ruto is not complete but still real, a way to keep their options open while making sure their voices are heard.
Even though some leaders have made it clear where they stand, the average Luo voter is still uncertain.
Some still support ODM and the late Raila Odinga, while others are starting to see Ruto’s leadership in a better light, especially younger people who are looking for new ideas and new opportunities. It’s a changing situation, and a lot could happen as the election approaches.
