In a society that places high value on academic achievement, many young people grow up believing that success only comes with a degree. From childhood, we are told that school is the only ticket to a better life. But in today’s world, that belief no longer holds absolute truth.
While education remains important, graduating is not the only key to success. Many talented and hardworking individuals have proved that determination, creativity and practical skills can also open doors. In Kenya today, thousands of youths are earning a living through online work, digital marketing and content creation an evolving opportunities that did not exist two decades ago. The digital revolution has made it possible for people to build careers without necessarily stepping into an office or holding a university certificate.
Success in the 21st century is increasingly driven by innovation and adaptability rather than academic titles. Some graduates spend years searching for employment, while others who never made it to university are creating jobs for themselves and others. The difference lies in mindset and not in the number of certificates one has.
That is not to say education is irrelevant. It builds knowledge and discipline, but it should not limit one’s vision. What truly matters is how individuals use the skills, ideas and networks they have to make a difference.
As Kenya continues to face high unemployment among the educated youth, they also need to prioritize acquiring skills that can enable them to employ themselves and create job for others. Success is not confined to the classroom. You can make it in life out of class with self discipline, passion, effort and the courage to think differently.
