On May 30, 2025, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya’s political rally in Mosoriot, Nandi County, was abruptly interrupted when police deployed teargas to disperse the gathering. The event, aimed at garnering support for Salasya’s 2027 presidential bid, turned chaotic as law enforcement intervened, citing security concerns.
Salasya’s rally commenced with a significant turnout of supporters in Mosoriot, a region considered a stronghold of President William Ruto. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the MP addressed the crowd, emphasizing youth empowerment and national unity. However, the situation escalated when police officers approached the venue and lobbed teargas canisters into the assembly, causing panic and dispersal of attendees.
In a video shared by Salasya, the MP is seen attempting to continue his speech amidst the chaos, questioning the rationale behind the police’s actions. He condemned the use of force on peaceful demonstrators, stating, “Threats and intimidation are cowardice. Why teargas peaceful people of Mosoriot when they want to hear from me? It’s unacceptable; Rift Valley is also Kenya.”
The incident has drawn criticism from various political figures who view the police’s actions as a suppression of democratic rights. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya condemned the attack on Salasya, terming it a blatant violation of democratic principles and an affront to political tolerance. He emphasized that Kenya’s Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to political association and freedom of expression, which must be upheld and protected at all times.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also weighed in, labeling the incident as an unfortunate display of political intolerance. He warned that such acts undermine democracy, which thrives on open dialogue and respect for differing views.
Peter Salasya has been a vocal figure in Kenyan politics, often challenging the status quo. In March 2025, he was forcibly removed from Nyayo Stadium during a football match, an incident that sparked widespread condemnation. Salasya later accused political rivals of orchestrating the assault, stating that it was a planned act meant to intimidate him.
Despite these challenges, Salasya continues to mobilize support, particularly among the youth. In April 2025, he launched the Western Youth Movement, aiming to unite and empower young people across the region. The initiative has garnered significant attention and debate, positioning Salasya as a polarizing yet influential figure in Western Kenya.
