The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing a major split. Recent events in Busia County have shown just how deep the divisions go, as two rival groups within the party held separate campaigns. This internal fight comes at a difficult time, following the death of the party’s longtime leader, Raila Odinga.
The main clash is between Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and the group led by Oburu Odinga. Sifuna and his supporters are refusing to back down, even after threats that they might be kicked out of the party. They have called the other side “opportunists” who are only looking out for themselves.
The biggest point of tension is a possible deal between ODM and UDA (President Ruto’s party). Sifuna’s team is completely against this. They believe such a move betrays the party’s values and only helps President Ruto get re-elected.
Sifuna’s faction claims the current leadership has abandoned the 10-point agenda that Raila Odinga left behind. They are calling for: Youth Leadership: A push for younger people to take over the party’s top spots. Government Accountability: Focusing on the needs of regular citizens instead of making political deals.
Meanwhile, supporters of President Ruto in the region are blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta for the mess, saying his influence is what caused the party to break apart.
As the next election approaches, ODM is in a tough spot. It remains to be seen if the party can find a way to stay together or if these two groups will go their separate ways for good.
