Illegal abortion is the termination of a pregnancy in a way that violates the laws of a country or is carried out by unqualified persons or under unsafe conditions. Unplanned pregnancy is a pregnancy that is unintended and unprepared for in advance by an individual, either mentally, physically, or financially.
Students may prefer to terminate a pregnancy in order to continue with their studies. Some of them end up depressed, leading them to choose simpler and cheaper ways to abort the child, which are very risky. Abortion may lead to death due to continuous bleeding. Some women may end up infertile when there is damage to the uterus. Others may develop chronic conditions such as kidney failure, as the bladder may be affected and other parts infected.
Unplanned pregnancy may be stressful. One may not have the mental preparedness to support a child or even the financial ability, as one may still be dependent on parents. Some parents may even reject their children for breaking their trust and expectations. This may be one of the most difficult moments in life, and some individuals may have suicidal thoughts. Many people prefer to abort due to a lack of acceptance.
To reduce the number, there is a need for clear and accurate information about contraceptive methods and how to use them, as well as the risks of unprotected sex, consent, and healthy relationships. Services should be confidential and youth-friendly so that students feel safe using them. Students should also be encouraged to delay sexual activity if they are not ready, emphasizing responsibility and the consequences of sexual activity.
Offering reproductive health counseling can provide mental health support for students dealing with pressure or relationship issues. The use of substances may often lead to poor decision-making and risky sexual behavior. Support for pregnant students will reduce stigma and provide academic and social support, thereby lowering the pressure for unsafe abortions.
The community, including family and friends, should be informed and encouraged to support pregnant students in order to reduce stigma and unsafe abortions for a better future.
