How the president might use his power to campaign in 2027 is already partially visible through the indirect and direct messages. The first one claims he is arranging a meeting with Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa to discuss the “chain of command.” While insiders talk about the “wrecking plan” as the motive for the mutiny within the United Opposition and forming a broad alliance ahead of the general election.
The move at the moment is very much like the one in the 2022 election when Ruto managed to gather the small political parties under Kenya Kwanza alliance to his advantage. Still, it is way too different from then. The ex-allies have turned against each other while the opposition has been able to recover after the demise of the veteran politician Raila Odinga.
Experts take Ruto’s clarification as a signal of a shift in the political landscape that no longer reflects the traditional voting pattern. Nevertheless, opponents express their concerns that these types of agreements are only for self-interests and rarely result in good governance and accountability.
Nakuru and other parts of the Rift Valley are places where people have different views. While some believe it will bring stability, others feel that it is just a way to exploit the system. One thing is certain as the political alliance keeps on fluctuating: negotiations, compromises, and survival will rule the way to 2027.
