For several years now, novels have been used in day-to-day life, for example in Secondary schools, novels are often used as set books. Today, novels are not only considered for learning but also, it has been significant as a pillar for human connection and expression.
Many of the novels we tend to interact with are fictional thus tends to take us away from the real world to the fantasy world. Let’s take for instance the novel, ‘ Blossoms of The Savannah’ by H.R Ole Kulet, a novel that has been done as set book by some of the recent high schoolers.
This novel offers escapism in that sometimes in a world, rather surrounding that can be overwhelming and tiresome, it allows you to temporarily forget all your worries and enter a different world. These works of fiction have the ability to captivate, educate and often transforms us as a key to humanity today thus are essential to our lives.
A number of people today tend to just take novels for granted forgetting they are somehow significant to us. One of the most significant benefit about novels and this has made me read novels several times is their capacity to encourage empathy.
We often read novels with characters from diverse backgrounds like wealthy families and even some from poor backgrounds, yet we tend to immerse ourselves in the stories and sometimes even show sympathy for characters who are portrayed as to be suffering.
Through these experiences, we gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in for instance the novel, ‘ Beloved’ by Toni Morrison, provides us with a better understanding and view through which we can examine human nature and its complexities therefore encouraging us to learn to walk in others’ shoes. Another role of novels is preserving history and culture.
Through literature, we can gain a glimpse of the past thus understanding the struggles, triumphs and even values of different societies. A perfect example is Chinua Achebe’s ‘ Things Fall Apart’ a novel I like reading since my early stages of growing, offers a window to the past therefore providing us with valuable insights into the human condition and elaborating the importance of cultural heritage.
Novels form part of the human experience mainly from the works of fiction portrayed in them. They offer connection, understanding and empathy therefore enabling us to get insights of the world around us.
People tend to read novels for education purposes, some read them to escape the world of reality and others just mainly for pleasure, which are good reasons to study novels. In a world that AI is rapidly taking control, we should not only rely on Artificial Intelligence to enrich our lives with knowledge, but we should also look at works of fiction a good number of times so as to broaden our perspectives. Even as we continue to go about our daily lives and modern world complexities, at least we should celebrate and cherish the power of novels.
