Chelsea was founded in 1905 because the owner of Stamford Bridge, Gus Mears, wanted to stage football matches there. He attempted to sell the ground to Fulham Football Club, but they declined, leading him to establish Chelsea Football Club instead.
Despite being founded in 1905, Chelsea rapidly rose and was promoted to First Division in 1907, just two years after their formation. Chelsea’s original kit was not the famous blue they wear today. They initially wore Eton blue shirts, which were the color of the racing silks worn by the club’s president, Earl Cadogan.
The lion in Chelsea’s crest was inspired by the coat of arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea, reflecting the club’s pride in its local heritage. Chelsea was one of the few clubs to attract large crowds and notable players during the interwar years. Despite not winning major trophies, they were popular and financially stable, leading to the construction of an extensive new stand at Stamford Bridge in 1939.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Chelsea became known as one of England’s most glamorous clubs. This period, often referred to as the “Kings of the Kings Road” era, saw the team associated with the London celebrity culture of the time.
Chelsea has a youth academy club which is one of the most productive in England. This is because the youth’s club has helped produce several notable talents over the years. A good example is Reece James, Chelsea’s current captain and John Terry became the club’s legend and the longest-serving captain
Chelsea Football Club transformed completely in 2003 after a Russian man known as Roman Abramovich bought managers and players who helped the team perform extremely well. Under is ownership, Chelsea managed to win 5 league titles, 5 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 2 Champion League, 2 Europa League and 1 Super Cup.
Chelsea is currently owned by a consortium of investors led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and private equity giant Clearlake Capital own Chelsea FC. Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano are the co-founders of Clearlake Capital.
